It's time to change your hosting provider
These days it's quite easy to run your own web hosting company. You rent a bunch of virtual servers from Amazon, Microsoft or Google, you install some server software on them, and then you start taking orders. And truth be told, many people have made a lot of money by doing just that.
However, some of these people have gotten greedy. As their number of clients grew, they didn't invest more money into new servers, preferring to give their clients fewer and fewer CPU and memory resources. And to add insult to the injury, new companies have started to offer lifetime hosting packages for pennies, creating a business model that's guaranteed to fail on the long run, as their servers become more and more crowded.
You may have noticed that the quality of your hosting package has degraded lately. Maybe you wanted to upgrade your WordPress-based site, for example, but you couldn't do that because the PHP version of the software that's running on the server is too old. This means that the techies who work for the hosting company don't take the time to patch the software, even though this will cause serious security problems not only for the servers, but also for the clients.
Another key issue is website loading speed. As you probably know, people don't like waiting. So, if your site needs 5 to 10 seconds to load, you will lose a lot of visitors. Search engines know this, so they'll reward people who have fast sites with better rankings. Yes, sometimes you can outrank your competitors by simply picking a better hosting company!
It goes without saying that there are several things that you can do to boost website loading speed. I'll probably write another article that gets into all the details, but here are the basics. To be fast, your site needs to load stylesheets first, make as few HTTP/HTTPS requests as possible, compress files, load JavaScript and CSS from external files, minify the code by getting rid of unnecessary characters, preload the required components whenever it is possible to do so, optimize images (I've already written an article about that) and use a content delivery network.
Everyone likes nice neighbors, isn't it? So, why would you want to share the same server with a spammer? If you're paying something like $5/month for web hosting, I guarantee that many of your virtual neighbors are doing shady things online. So, choose another hosting provider, which may have higher prices, but treats his business and his customers with respect. To see if your hosting company is in the red zone, use one of the many IP-based server reputation monitoring services that can be found on the web.
Maybe you want to have access to modern control panel software such as cPanel, and the company that hosts your site doesn't want to invest into a license, making it much harder for you to install WordPress, create email accounts, and so on. If this is the case, pick another company that offers all the applications and features that you can't live without.
Finally, poor tech support is one of the most important reasons why you should replace your hosting provider with a company that knows how to treat its clients. Lots of hosting companies, including some of the biggest names in the industry, don't provide any online support options and won't even answer phone calls, letting their users rely on support tickets that never get answered. You want to work with a company that is there for you and has knowledgeable tech reps, who will do their best to help whenever you run into trouble.
